Steve Smith Memorial Physical Science Book Scholarship

Steven Barry Smith was an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Physics at NWC from 1983 until his death in 1999. He was a U.S. Chess Federation rated Postel Chess Master and Six-time Wyoming State Chess Champion. In 1991, he designed, programmed and built a device that allowed a blind friend to write, communicate and play a musical instrument. The project won a regional award in the Johns Hopkins National Search for Computing to Assist Persons with Disabilities. He was a teacher, mentor, advisor and philosopher. Known for his eloquent explanations, Smith made his classes enjoyable and inspired his students to learn by making a challenging course relaxed and fun. He was revered by colleagues and students. This annual scholarship will provide financial assistance to students taking classes in the Physical Science Division at Northwest College.
