Rose and Del Cannon Elks Nursing Endowment
Nursing care made a lasting impression on a Powell family and led to the creation of a scholarship program at Northwest College.
Rose Cannon died of cancer in 2007. In the last weeks of her life, she was attended at home by nurses in hospice care.
“She just loved them,” said husband Delbert Cannon, a member of the Powell Elks Lodge.
The desire to give something back inspired Delbert and the Elks Lodge to do something for the nursing profession. With the help of Steve Thulin, a Northwest College faculty member, who was Exalted Ruler of the Elks at the time, the endowed scholarship for NWC nursing students was born. Elks’ members contributed to the scholarship fund.
Two sons of Delbert and Rose Cannon — Jeff and Jim— are graduates of NWC. A grandson, Michael Burnett, graduated from NWC and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Wyoming. He now works for Texas Instruments in Dallas.
“In this day of technology, higher education is very important, and I think NWC gives a lot of less fortunate people a better chance to get their education,” Delbert said.
Rose Cannon was Chaplain of the Elks at the time of her death.
