Oliver and Goldy Dawson Scholarship Endowment

After a few years in rainy Seattle, the Dawsons came to Cody in 1966 when a CPA business came up for sale. Oliver ran his tax and accounting business, and Goldy went to work as a 7th grade reading teacher. They never left. Both of the Dawsons are college graduates, as are their two children. It is their belief that a college education opens doors and paves the way to higher pay.
“When we started our scholarship in 2004, it was really important to Oliver that our scholarship be available to kids with a “C” average. He believed strongly that he wanted to help the kids who needed help, not the ones who already had the grades for other scholarships,” says Goldy. Goldy and Oliver Dawson started their scholarship endowment to support graduates of Cody High School. After a few years, they decided to include Meeteetse High School grads in the application pool. “We did it while we were still alive, so we could enjoy the thought of helping students who need the help,” says Goldy. In the 12 years since the scholarship began, they have met many of its recipients at the NWC annual Scholarship Luncheon, something she still looks forward to every year.
Goldy and Oliver chose to partner with NWC because it was close to Cody, and they could be involved with the college and pay close attention to the progress of the scholarship and its recipients. “NWC does a commendable job with students—it’s a perfect place to start to get basics out of the way before going on to a University,” she finished.
