June and Lyle Haberland Memorial Fund
Dr. Lyle Haberland met June, a nurse and his wife-to-be, at Sacramento County Hospital in California. As a young nurse, June had aspirations of entering the nursing education field, but instead she became Lyle’s right hand in the family practice he opened in Powell in 1959. Once their children were born, June became a full-time mother of three and a homemaker, but according to Lyle, June continued to be an essential part of the success of his business. “June greatly assisted my medical practice, and without her strong support I would have folded many times,” he said.
When June passed away in 1994, Lyle donated her car (a 1994 Mercury Sable) to the Northwest College Foundation to be raffled. He requested that the proceeds from the raffle be designated to the nursing program. Those funds, along with other donations given throughout the years, have been invested to begin a scholarship endowment as well as to support student travel and to make large-scale purchases to enhance healthcare educational offerings for NWC students.
Dr. Haberland retired in 2014 after a 55-year career of caring for patients both young and old in Powell, WY. Through the years, he and June always considered NWC to be a great asset to Powell and Northwest Wyoming, and the two of them enjoyed and benefited from many of the college’s programs and activities. The June Haberland Memorial Fund continues Dr. Haberland’s legacy of caring for his community, and also memorializes his wife’s nursing profession and her love of the college and of education.
