Dennis Carmon Memorial Scholarship Profile
After her husband, Dennis, died in a four-wheeler accident, Betty Carmon used memorial gifts to establish the Dennis Carmon Memorial Scholarship at NWC. Her goal was to help educate future teachers to provide hope and skills to people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The Carmon’s son, Steele, was diagnosed with ASD at 2-1/2 years old in 1990. At that time, the ratio of people with ASD was one in 130,000. Today it is one in 24. Betty poured her energy into advocacy and education for students with special needs. She served on the Powell School Board and was a member of the Governor’s Council for Special Education for 15 years, conducting workshops all over the state of Wyoming. Steele made great strides in development because of early diagnoses and excellent support from teachers, which Betty hopes to perpetuate for others.
