Cody High School Class of 1949 Scholarship

Jerry Lanchbury, member of the Cody High School Class of ’49, said, “Ours is a special class. We believe in giving, in whatever way you can.” There’s some confusion about whose idea the scholarship fund was, but since its initial funding in 1999 with money left over from a class trip to Hawaii, many members of the class have donated to the Cody High School Class of ’49 Scholarship Endowment. By 2005, the endowment had grown to accomplish their goal—to assist 4 graduates of Cody High School annually as they strive to gain an associate degree at Northwest College.
“Higher education is essential in this day and age,” said class member and donor Dolly Hedderman. Classmates Jim Nielson and Alan Simpson give credit for their appreciation of education to an influential Cody High teacher, Elizabeth Gilbert. According to Simpson and Nielson, their love of learning came from her. She expected the best from her students and because they respected her, they gave it.
Growing the endowment of the Cody High School Class of ’49 Scholarship has kept the class close, fosters memories, and gives them a sense of united purpose and meaning. Their pride in making a difference and their desire to share their good fortune with others has created a tremendous legacy benefiting Cody High School students aspiring to attend NWC.
